You need a Qatari employer who sponsors your work visa, and in practice a Qatari driving licence. Qatar's Ministry of Interior gives that licence only to non-Qataris with a residence permit, so you apply after arrival with your sponsor's letter, then take tests through an approved driving school. Heavy licences need you to be 21. ECR passport holders also need emigration clearance.
How can an Indian get a driver job in Qatar, and is an Indian driving licence enough?
You need a Qatari employer who sponsors your work visa, and in practice a Qatari driving licence. Qatar's Ministry of Interior gives that licence only to non-Qataris with a residence permit, so you apply after arrival with your sponsor's letter, then take tests through an approved driving school. Heavy licences need you to be 21. ECR passport holders also need emigration clearance.
A driver in Qatar is hired like any other foreign worker: a Qatari employer sponsors the work visa, and the job only starts legally once you hold the right visa and, later, a residence permit. Our Qatar jobs guide covers that general route. This guide covers what is different for drivers: the Qatari driving licence, the light and heavy categories, and the tests.
The key rule comes from the Ministry of Interior (MOI). Its driving-licence service page, as shown in October 2026, lists among the conditions for a licence that non-Qataris must hold a legal residence permit in the country. So a Qatar licence is something you get after you arrive on your work visa, not before you leave India. Confirm on the official MOI page, because the page shows no date of last update.
Read in October 2026: the MOI driving-licence service page and the MOI Licensing Affairs Department pages (functions, traffic fees and approved driving schools); the Embassy of India in Doha's recruitment FAQ and its checklist for Indians travelling to Qatar; the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) emigration pages; and the Qatar Government Communications Office (GCO) Labour Reform page, which blocks direct access, so we read an archived copy captured in October 2026. The Qatar Visa Center website (qatarvisacenter.com) blocked our access, so we do not list its steps or fees.
| Licence (MOI wording) | Minimum age (MOI) | Fee for non-Qataris (MOI) | Typical driver jobs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Private light vehicle | 18 | QAR 250 for five years | Family or house driver, company car or pickup driver, light-vehicle delivery |
| Private heavy vehicle | 21 | QAR 300 for five years | Truck, trailer, tanker and heavy bus roles (job posts call these "heavy driver") |
| Constructional, agricultural or industrial vehicles (equipment and machinery) | 21 | QAR 300 for five years | Equipment operator roles on sites; check whether the job is really a driving job or an operator job |
| Motorcycle | 18 | QAR 150 for five years | Motorbike delivery rider |
| Annual permit for taxi, limousine or public transport vehicles | Not stated on the page | QAR 250 a year | Taxi, limousine and public-transport driving, on top of the licence |
| Driver's learning licence (all vehicle types) | Same as the licence sought | QAR 150 for three months | Needed while you train at a driving school |
The MOI service page sets out separate procedures for different groups. For non-Qataris it lists: reaching the legal age, a letter from the sponsor approving the application for a new licence for the employee and naming the type of licence required, the passport and a copy, a copy of the sponsor's ID card if the sponsor is an individual, and three recent colour photos. It says the applicant is then transferred to one of the approved driving schools of their choice.
A separate group on the same page covers people coming to Qatar to work who have a residence permit and hold a licence issued by their own country's authority. The page says they are sent to driving schools to take a test of their ability to drive, run by a committee under the Traffic Department. If they pass, they get the licence. If they fail, they get one more chance, and after that they are moved to a full learning course at the school.
What the page does not do is name countries. It does not mention India, and it does not publish a list of licences that can be exchanged without a test. Job posts that promise "Indian licence converted on arrival" or "no test needed" go beyond what MOI says, so get that promise in writing from the employer and confirm it with the Traffic Department before relying on it.
Visitors are a different case. The MOI page says holders of a valid international driving licence entering as visitors or tourists may drive on it for no more than six months, and GCC-issued licences held by GCC residents visiting Qatar for up to three months. These visitor rules are not a route to a driving job; employers in the job posts we saw ask for a Qatari licence.
The GCO Labour Reform page says Qatar introduced a minimum wage of QAR 1,000 a month in March 2021, covering all employees across sectors including domestic workers, and that the employer must also provide QAR 500 a month for accommodation and QAR 300 for food, or provide these in kind. That covers family drivers as well as company drivers. GCO also describes a Wage Protection System meant to end cash payment and let authorities check that wages are paid in full and on time.
No official page we read gives a market salary for light or heavy drivers in Qatar, so we give none. Salary sites quote figures without dates or sources. Compare any offer with the minimum above and with what is written in your contract, and be wary of a heavy-driver offer that pays less than a light-driver one without explanation.
MEA's emigration page lists 17 countries where emigration check is required, and Qatar is one of them, as shown in October 2026. MEA's clearance page says everyone with an ECR-endorsed passport going to any of these countries to take up employment needs emigration clearance, whether hired through a registered recruiting agent or directly by a foreign employer. Check whether your passport is ECR before you accept an offer. See our ECR guide and eMigrate guide.

Not as a resident worker, according to the MOI page. Non-Qataris need a residence permit to get a Qatari licence, and foreign licence holders who come to work are sent to a driving school for a test. The six-month rule for international licences on the MOI page is for visitors and tourists.
The MOI page we read does not say so. It describes a test at a driving school for people coming to work who hold their own country's licence, with a second chance and then a full course if they fail. It lists no countries for exchange, so confirm with the Traffic Department.
21, according to the MOI driving-licence page. The same age applies to licences for construction, agricultural and industrial equipment. Light vehicle and motorcycle licences need you to be 18.
MOI's fee table shows QAR 250 for five years for a light-vehicle licence and QAR 300 for five years for heavy-vehicle and equipment licences, for non-Qataris. Add QAR 50 per test attempt and QAR 150 for a three-month learning licence. Driving-school course fees are separate and not on the MOI page.
No route for that appears on the MOI page. It lists a legal residence permit in Qatar as a condition for non-Qataris, so the licence comes after arrival on a work visa.
Yes. MEA lists Qatar among the 17 ECR countries in October 2026. If your passport is ECR-endorsed and you are going for employment, you need emigration clearance through eMigrate before travelling.
The GCO Labour Reform page says the minimum wage is QAR 1,000 a month basic, plus QAR 500 for accommodation and QAR 300 for food unless the employer provides these in kind. No official page we read gives a market salary for drivers.
GCO says Qatar announced 20 visa centres in India and six other countries to speed up recruitment and protect workers at home. Qatari press coverage of the 2019 launch described biometrics, a medical examination and contract signing there. Confirm current steps and fees on qatarvisacenter.com.
MOI's fee table lists an annual permit for driving taxis, limousines and public transport vehicles at QAR 250, in addition to the driving licence. Ask the employer who applies and pays for it.
