Driver jobs in Dubai for Indians: licence, visa and permit rules from RTA and UAE sources

Yes, but an Indian driver needs an employment visa arranged by the employer, and usually a UAE driving licence. India does not appear on the countries RTA Dubai lists for licence exchange as shown in October 2026, so most Indian licence holders should expect to train and pass RTA tests. Heavy vehicle, taxi and delivery roles add separate age, permit and sponsorship rules.

Can an Indian get a driver job in Dubai and what licence is needed?

Yes, but an Indian driver needs an employment visa arranged by the employer, and usually a UAE driving licence. India does not appear on the countries RTA Dubai lists for licence exchange as shown in October 2026, so most Indian licence holders should expect to train and pass RTA tests. Heavy vehicle, taxi and delivery roles add separate age, permit and sponsorship rules.

The short answer, from what the official pages say

The official pages describe no separate "driver visa". A driver in Dubai is an employee like any other: the employer arranges a work permit and residence under the process in our Dubai work visa guide. What changes for drivers is the driving licence, and for some roles a professional permit.

As shown by the RTA Dubai page on exchanging foreign licences in October 2026, there are 20 countries whose licences can be exchanged for a Dubai licence, and India is not among them. The same RTA page says you cannot exchange a licence from certain other places, so check your own country on the live list. Confirm on the official RTA page before you plan around any employer's promise that your Indian licence will simply be converted.

Which licence or permit fits which driver job

Job typeWhat the official pages sayWhat they do not say
Light vehicle (car, company or family driver)u.ae gives the minimum age for cars and light vehicles as 18. RTA Dubai issues a UAE licence after training at a licensed driving institute and passing the knowledge, yard and road tests. No salary, and no statement that an Indian licence is exchangeable.
Heavy vehicle (truck, tanker, trailer)RTA lists a heavy vehicle licence (all light and heavy vehicles) with a minimum age of 20. u.ae gives the same age for heavy vehicles and tractors.Whether prior Indian heavy-vehicle experience shortens training. The RTA training-reduction rule we found is written for light-vehicle licences.
Bus (light or heavy)RTA lists a light bus licence (up to 26 passengers excluding the driver) and a heavy bus licence, both with a minimum age of 21.Extra permits for specific services such as school buses are separate, see the permit row below.
Taxi, luxury, tourist and school-bus driverRTA has a separate Professional Driver Permit service. It is applied for by the company, the driver must be 25 or older, and the page says the training course is one day. It lists an Emirates ID, an electronic police clearance certificate and a medical report as driver requirements. The permit page's fee table is shown for the tourist-vehicle permit, so do not assume the same fees for taxi.
Delivery rider (motorbike or delivery vehicle)RTA's delivery technical manual lists a UAE driving licence qualifying the driver for a delivery vehicle, a Dubai Police certificate of good conduct, valid residency and sponsorship by the delivery company or the company supplying the driver, and an age of 21 to 55.The manual shows no date on the copy we read, so confirm it is current. It does not give earnings.

Indian licence: convert, exchange or retrain?

RTA's exchange page lists the 20 countries eligible for exchange, with columns for whether translation is needed and whether the foreign licence must be surrendered. India is not on that list as shown in October 2026. The page also says the licence to be exchanged must be valid, and that an eye test is needed with a fee between AED 140 and AED 180 depending on the centre.

For a new licence, RTA's service page says that if you hold a previous valid light-vehicle licence from another country that cannot be exchanged, you are exempt from some training: only 20 training sessions if it was issued more than 5 years ago, 30 sessions if issued between 2 and 5 years ago, and 40 if issued less than 2 years ago. The page makes the same rule available for light vehicles only. It also describes a once-only knowledge-and-road-test route for Golden Visa holders.

Online job posts often say "Indian licence accepted" or "licence conversion on arrival". The RTA pages we read do not use those phrases for India, so treat them as the employer's claim to be confirmed in writing. Ask who pays for training, tests and the licence, because the RTA pages state fees but not who bears them for an employee.

Step-by-step route for an Indian driver

  1. Decide the job type (light vehicle, heavy vehicle, bus, taxi or delivery) and read the matching rule in the table above before you accept an offer.
  2. Check your passport category. The UAE is one of the countries on the Ministry of External Affairs ECR list, so an ECR passport holder going for employment needs emigration clearance. See our ECR passport guide and eMigrate guide.
  3. Get a written job offer that names the employer, job title and pay. The UAE government's worker guide says the contract terms must be consistent with the job offer you signed in your own country, and that you should keep a copy.
  4. The employer applies for the work permit and entry permit. Ask for the permit details in writing before you travel, as set out in our Dubai work visa guide.
  5. After arrival, complete the medical fitness test, Emirates ID and residence steps through the employer. For a UAE licence, open a traffic file, take an eye test, train at an RTA-accredited institute and book the knowledge, yard and road tests, as RTA describes.
  6. For taxi, tourist, school-bus or luxury roles, the company completes the Professional Driver Permit process with RTA, including the police clearance and medical report.

Who pays for the visa and recruitment

The UAE government's "Know Your Rights" guidance, as summarised on u.ae (page updated 15 October 2026), says the costs of recruitment and travel, and the expenses for obtaining your residency permit, are borne by the employer. The u.ae page also states that charging recruitment fees to prospective employees is illegal in the UAE, and that employers must not take workers' passports.

Our Dubai work visa guide also notes the UAE government places the approval fees and AED 3,000 bank guarantee on the employer. In India, a separate rule limits what a registered agent may charge; see our service charge limit guide. If someone asks you for a "visa fee" or "job fee" for a driver job, ask for the legal basis in writing and read our scam guide.

Frequently asked questions

What driver jobs are there in Dubai for Indians?

Job boards list light-vehicle and company drivers, heavy truck and bus drivers, taxi drivers and delivery riders. The official pages set different licence, age and permit rules for each, so check the matching rule before accepting an offer.

Is there a special driver visa for Dubai?

The official pages we read describe no separate driver visa. A driver gets an employer-sponsored work permit and residence like other employees, and some roles add an RTA permit.

Can I convert my Indian driving licence to a UAE licence?

RTA Dubai's exchange page lists 20 countries eligible for exchange and India was not among them in October 2026. Confirm on the official RTA page, because lists can change.

Do I need to take a driving test in Dubai if I already drive in India?

Usually you train and test through an RTA-accredited institute. RTA says holders of an unexchangeable light-vehicle licence need fewer training sessions (20, 30 or 40, depending on licence age), but the tests still apply unless a special route such as the Golden Visa one is available.

What is the minimum age for heavy vehicle and bus licences?

RTA Dubai and u.ae give 20 years for heavy vehicles and 21 years for buses. Taxi and similar Professional Driver Permits show a minimum of 25 on the RTA permit page.

Who pays for my visa and recruitment if I am hired as a driver?

The UAE government's Know Your Rights guidance, as shown on u.ae, says the employer bears recruitment, travel and residency-permit costs, and that charging recruitment fees to prospective employees is illegal. Report a demand for such fees to the authorities and keep evidence.

Can I work as a driver in Dubai on a visit visa?

The official process describes the employer obtaining a work permit and entry permit. We found no official page allowing work on a visit visa, so do not rely on a promise to convert a visit visa later; ask for the work permit details in writing.

Do Indian drivers need emigration clearance for the UAE?

If your passport is ECR and you go for employment, yes. The Ministry of External Affairs requires clearance for ECR passport holders going to any of the 17 ECR countries, and the UAE is on that list in MEA documents. Check your passport status and the current list on eMigrate.

How much does a driver earn in Dubai?

No official page we read states a driver wage, so we do not give one. Compare any advertised salary against the written contract, and be cautious of offers that cannot name the employer.
