Jobs in Germany for Indians: the official routes and what actually works

Apply to German employers directly and use official channels: the Federal Employment Agency, the Make it in Germany portal and EURES. German law needs a concrete job offer and a recognised qualification for most work permits. Without an offer, the Opportunity Card lets you search in Germany for up to one year. No agent can guarantee a job or visa.

The routes at a glance

Facts below were read on 19 October 2026 from the German statute text on gesetze-im-internet.de and the Federal Employment Agency (Bundesagentur für Arbeit) website. Rules and figures change, so confirm on the official page before you act.

RouteJob offer first?Key conditions in the law
EU Blue Card (§18g)Yes, a job of at least six monthsUniversity-level qualification (at least three years, ISCED 2011 / EQF level 6), and a salary of at least 50% of the annual pension contribution assessment ceiling. Skilled-worker permits (§18, §18a, §18b)Yes, a concrete job offer§18 requires a concrete job offer, Federal Employment Agency approval where needed, and a recognised qualification (or a recognised or comparable foreign degree) where that is a prerequisite. §18a (vocational training) and §18b (academic education) allow any qualified employment.
Opportunity Card / Chancenkarte (§20a)NoRecognised foreign vocational qualification of at least two years or a recognised degree, at least simple German or English at B2, secured livelihood, and enough points or skilled-worker status. Up to one year to search. See the requirements guide.

Step by step: getting a job in Germany from India

  1. Check which route fits you. A degree plus a job offer points to the Blue Card or a §18b permit; vocational training plus an offer points to §18a; a recognised qualification but no offer points to the Opportunity Card.
  2. Find out early whether you need a visa, official recognition of your qualification, or a level of German. The Federal Employment Agency tells applicants to check these before applying.
  3. Search official sources: the Make it in Germany job listings, the Federal Employment Agency job search (German only) and EURES, the EU job exchange, all named by the Federal Employment Agency. Its advice and support for jobseekers are described as free of charge.
  4. Prepare a tailored cover letter and a CV of not longer than two pages, plus certificates. The Federal Employment Agency says Europass tools can create both for free. Apply directly to employers, usually by email or the company website.
  5. Expect a selection process such as an interview or an assessment centre. The agency gives no set timeframe, so replies can take a while. Apply to several jobs at once.
  6. With a written offer, apply for the matching visa and residence permit through the German mission responsible for you. Required documents, fees and appointment steps are on the official pages and change over time.

Qualification recognition and language

The Federal Employment Agency states that your professional qualifications determine whether you can work in Germany, and that good language skills improve your chances. The statute links recognition to the permit: under §18, the equivalence of your qualification must be determined, or you must hold a recognised or comparable foreign degree, where that is a prerequisite for the permit. For the Opportunity Card, §20a requires your qualification to be confirmed by a competent domestic body.

On language, §20a asks for at least simple German or English at level B2. For jobs, the Federal Employment Agency does not give a single required level; it depends on the occupation and the employer, so read each job advert. For regulated professions such as healthcare, a separate permission to practise may also be needed, as §18 mentions a professional practice permit where one is required.

Which jobs are in demand? What the sources do and do not say

Many Indian websites publish lists of in-demand jobs and salary tables. The official pages we could retrieve do not give an occupation-by-occupation shortage list or salary table, and the Federal Employment Agency page we read does not name specific shortage occupations. The Blue Card law (§18g) refers to occupation groups under the international ISCO-08 classification (groups 132, 133, 134, 21, 221, 222, 225, 226, 23 and 25) for its lower salary threshold. Check the official portal to see exactly which jobs those groups cover for your case.

Salary figures in euros for the Blue Card are not in the statute; the law gives percentages, and the Federal Ministry publishes the minimum salaries each year in the Bundesanzeiger. Look up the current euro amount before you negotiate an offer. We did not retrieve that figure, so we do not quote one.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a job in Germany from India without a degree?

It depends on the route. §18a allows any qualified employment for skilled workers with recognised vocational training, and §20a accepts a recognised foreign vocational qualification of at least two years. The Blue Card needs a university-level qualification, with narrow exceptions in §18g for certain occupation groups with at least three years of recent professional experience.

Do I need to know German to work in Germany?

Not always by law, but it helps. The Federal Employment Agency says good language skills improve your chances. The Opportunity Card in §20a requires at least simple German or English at B2. Individual employers and regulated professions set their own requirements, so read each advert.

Can I get a job in Germany without an agent?

Yes. The Federal Employment Agency points to the Make it in Germany portal, its own job search and EURES, and says you apply directly to employers by email or their website. Its advice for jobseekers is described as free of charge.

What is the Germany Opportunity Card?

Under §20a it lets you look for work in Germany for up to one year without a job offer, if you meet the qualification, language, livelihood and points or skilled-worker conditions. It can be extended up to two more years if you find qualifying work and the agency approves.

What is the minimum salary for the EU Blue Card?

§18g sets it as at least 50% of the annual pension contribution assessment ceiling, or 45.3% in listed cases with Federal Employment Agency approval. The statute gives no euro amount, so confirm the current figure on the official Make it in Germany page.

Is my Indian degree valid in Germany?

Often it must be recognised or judged comparable first. §18 requires determined equivalence or a recognised or comparable foreign degree where that is a prerequisite, and §20a requires confirmation by a competent domestic body. Use the official recognition portal to see what applies to your profession.

How do I know a Germany job offer is genuine?

Verify the employer's contact details on its official website, expect an interview before any contract, and never pay to receive an offer. The Federal Employment Agency advises making no payments if you have doubts and not sharing personal data if you are unsure who you are dealing with.
