How do you get a job abroad from India?

Get a written job offer from a genuine overseas employer on a visa route that lets that employer sponsor you, verify any Indian recruiting agent on the eMigrate portal, check whether your passport is ECR, and complete the contract, insurance, medical and visa steps before you travel. Never pay an unregistered agent, and keep every receipt.

Ten steps

  1. Choose a destination and a legal route. For most workers that means an employer-sponsored work visa, such as the UAE work visa, the UK Skilled Worker visa, the Singapore Employment Pass or S Pass or the Maldives Work e-Visa.
  2. Find a real employer. Get the offer, salary and contract terms in writing.
  3. If an Indian agency is involved, verify it on eMigrate and learn the legal fee limit.
  4. Check your passport category: are you ECR or ECNR, and is your destination one of the 17 ECR countries?
  5. If you need emigration clearance, apply through eMigrate, with an attested contract and the PBBY insurance policy.
  6. Take the medical test the destination requires. For Gulf countries that is the GAMCA/Wafid medical.
  7. Get a Police Clearance Certificate if the employer or visa route asks for one.
  8. Have the visa or permit issued by the employer through the official system, and keep its status in writing.
  9. Travel only when the permit, contract, clearance (if needed) and insurance are in hand.
  10. Know where to complain from day one: the Protector of Emigrants, the Indian mission, the MADAD portal, or the OWRC on 1800 11 3090.

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to get an overseas job through an agent?

It can be, if the agent is registered with the Government of India, charges within the legal limit, gives receipts, and the employer and contract are genuine. Verify the agent on the eMigrate portal first.

Do I need to pay to get a job abroad?

A registered agent may charge a service fee within the legal limit and must give a receipt. Visa and permit costs vary by country; in the UAE the government page puts the work-permit fees and bank guarantee on the employer.

What is the first thing to check?

Whether the recruiting agent is registered on eMigrate, and whether the employer will obtain your visa or permit through the destination's official process.
