An Indian nurse cannot simply start work: Job Bank says foreign-trained nurses need a professional licence before practising in Canada. The route is an NNAS credential assessment, then registration with a provincial regulator, which for RNs in Ontario includes the NCLEX-RN, alongside a work permit or permanent residence. Fees and timings differ by regulator, so confirm each on its official page.
How can an Indian nurse get a nursing job in Canada?
An Indian nurse cannot simply start work: Job Bank says foreign-trained nurses need a professional licence before practising in Canada. The route is an NNAS credential assessment, then registration with a provincial regulator, which for RNs in Ontario includes the NCLEX-RN, alongside a work permit or permanent residence. Fees and timings differ by regulator, so confirm each on its official page.
Job Bank says that if you were trained as a nurse in another country, you need a professional licence before you can practise in Canada, and that the first step for foreign-trained nurses is the National Nursing Assessment Service (NNAS). It also says registration with a regulatory body is required in all provinces and territories. Job Bank's requirements page for registered nurses (NOC 31301) was checked in October 2026; confirm on the official page.
That means a Canadian employer, a recruiter or a consultancy cannot make you a working nurse on their own. The licence comes from a provincial regulator, and the regulator decides on your education, language, exam and registration. If someone tells you the licence is guaranteed or can be bought, read the scam section below.
| Stage | Who runs it | What the official pages say (checked October 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Credential assessment | NNAS (nnas.ca) | A credentialing service for internationally educated nurses. Eligible if you completed post-secondary nursing education outside Canada and were never licensed as a nurse in Canada in that profession. |
| 2. Regulator application | Provincial regulator, for example CNO (Ontario) or BCCNM (British Columbia) | Each regulator has its own requirements and timelines. NNAS says to check the regulator's website. |
| 3. Language | Regulator | CNO accepts evidence through education, experience, registration or an approved test (CELBAN, IELTS, OET, PTE Academic, TEF, TCF), at CNO's own benchmark scores. |
| 4. Exam | Regulator and NCSBN/Pearson | CNO says RN applicants must pass the NCLEX-RN. The Ontario RN/RPN jurisprudence exam is a separate CNO requirement. |
| 5. Right to work | IRCC, employer, regulator | CNO asks for proof of citizenship, permanent residency, or a work or study permit that authorizes you to practise nursing in Ontario. |
| 6. Job and permanent residence | Employers, IRCC | A job offer, an employer-specific work permit (LMIA or exempt), or Express Entry, including the healthcare and social services category. |
Job Bank adds that the process differs in Quebec, Yukon, Nunavut and the Northwest Territories, which have other authorities. Do not assume one province's steps apply elsewhere. NNAS also lists BCCNM as a participating regulator while BCCNM's own IEN page describes Inspire, so confirm which route applies to you directly with BCCNM.
| Point | Ontario (CNO) | British Columbia (BCCNM) |
|---|---|---|
| Education for RN | A baccalaureate nursing degree approved or recognized in any jurisdiction. CNO says a nursing diploma that allows you to practise as an RN in your home country will not meet the RN requirement, and you may be able to open an RPN application instead. | BCCNM assesses most internationally educated nurses for both LPN and RN in one application and says education may be needed to close gaps, from one course to a bridging program. |
| Assessment body | NNAS Advisory Report (the NNAS Education form is one of the evidence types CNO names for language proficiency) | BCCNM's IEN page describes applying to Inspire Global Assessments for identity, English, education credentials and a competency assessment, and applying to BCCNM at the same time. |
| Exam | NCLEX-RN for RN applicants; REx-PN for RPN applicants | The IEN page we read does not state the exam; check BCCNM before booking. |
| Recency | Evidence of practice as a nurse within the past three years | BCCNM says applicants are more likely to succeed if education was completed or nursing practised within the last 10 years. |
| Work status | Proof of citizenship, PR, or a permit that allows nursing in Ontario | BCCNM strongly recommends having the permits to work legally in Canada before applying. |
IRCC's category-based selection page, which shows a date of 16 October 2026, lists a healthcare and social services category. It says you need at least 12 months of full-time work experience (or equal part-time) in the past three years in a single listed occupation, in Canada or abroad, and that you must also meet the Express Entry criteria and the instructions for each round. Nursing occupations in its table are nursing coordinators and supervisors (31300), registered nurses and registered psychiatric nurses (31301), nurse practitioners (31302) and licensed practical nurses (32101). The page lists no language requirement for the category, but the round instructions govern, so check them. Being in an eligible category does not mean you will be invited.
The IRCC rounds page we read in October 2026 did not show healthcare draw dates, invitation numbers or minimum CRS scores, so we do not quote any. For how the points system works, read our Express Entry and CRS guide.
If you instead take a job offer on an employer-specific work permit, see our guide to jobs in Canada for Indians. An IRCC page for India dated 13 March 2023 says the employer pays for the LMIA (it gave CAN$1,000 per worker), that the government does not let the worker pay, and that no one can guarantee PR. Confirm the current fee and rules on the official page.
Job Bank's registered nurse prospects page says national labour conditions for 2024-2033 face a strong risk of shortage, and its outlooks were updated on 10 December 2025. Its three-year provincial ratings show Very good for Newfoundland and Labrador, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Ontario, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut; Good for Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, British Columbia and Yukon; and Moderate for Quebec. This describes demand for licensed nurses. It does not shorten licensing and it is not a job offer. Search real vacancies on Job Bank or on the Job Spectra jobs page.
Canada is not among the 17 ECR countries listed in our ECR passport guide, so emigration clearance on eMigrate is not required for Canada under that list. Check the Ministry of External Affairs list if your situation is unusual.
Job Spectra is operated by Spectravault Group LLP. We do not currently hold an eMigrate recruiting-agent registration, and we cannot arrange a Canadian licence, NNAS result or visa for you. Our Trust Center explains our no-upfront-job-fees policy. If you want to be considered for openings once you are licensed, you can submit your CV, but we do not guarantee any job or visa.

Yes, but only after being licensed by a provincial or territorial regulator and holding the right immigration status. Job Bank says foreign-trained nurses need a professional licence before practising, and names NNAS as the first step.
NNAS is the National Nursing Assessment Service, a credentialing service for internationally educated nurses. It builds an Advisory Report from verified documents, which is sent to the regulators you select. It is not a licence.
NNAS lists $750 CAD for the Expedited Service and $650 USD for the RPN Pathway as main application fees, and says fees are not refunded. Check the NNAS fees page before paying.
CNO says RN applicants in Ontario must pass the NCLEX-RN, and the NCLEX site lists a Canadian registration fee. Other regulators set their own requirements, so check the regulator you are applying to.
CNO says a nursing diploma that allows you to practise as an RN in your home country does not meet its RN education requirement, which is a baccalaureate nursing degree. It says you may be able to open an RPN application instead. Confirm your case with CNO.
IRCC's healthcare and social services category lists registered nurses, nurse practitioners and licensed practical nurses, among others. It asks for 12 months of full-time experience in the past three years in one listed occupation, and invitations are not guaranteed.
It depends on the route. For an employer-specific work permit, Canada.ca says the employer must find out whether the job needs an LMIA, and an IRCC page says the employer pays for it, not the worker. This guide did not read an official page on LMIA for Express Entry, so check IRCC.
Job Bank rates the registered nurse outlook Very good in Ontario, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland and Labrador and the northern territories, and Moderate in Quebec. Ratings describe demand, not how easy licensing is.
No. CNO says you must complete and submit your application yourself and not share login details, and BCCNM says applications must be submitted by the applicant and warns about fee-charging agencies.
