Jobs in Thailand for Indians: Non-B visa, work permit, LTR and scam warnings

You need a real job offer from a Thai employer, a Non-Immigrant B visa applied for through Thailand's e-Visa system, and then a work permit from the Department of Employment after you arrive. The visa exemption for Indians covers tourism and short business trips only. Some jobs are reserved for Thai nationals, and the MEA lists Thailand as an ECR country for emigration clearance.

How can an Indian get a job in Thailand legally?

You need a real job offer from a Thai employer, a Non-Immigrant B visa applied for through Thailand's e-Visa system, and then a work permit from the Department of Employment after you arrive. The visa exemption for Indians covers tourism and short business trips only. Some jobs are reserved for Thai nationals, and the MEA lists Thailand as an ECR country for emigration clearance.

The short answer: visa first, then a work permit

Thailand uses two separate permissions. The visa lets you enter for work, and the work permit lets you actually work. The Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs page on the Non-Immigrant B visa (dated 16 January 2020 on the page) says a foreigner who receives a Non-Immigrant visa can work in Thailand once a work permit is granted. The same page warns that working without a permit, or in occupations restricted under the Royal Decree B.E. 2522 (1979), can lead to prosecution with imprisonment, a fine or both.

As shown by the Royal Thai Embassy New Delhi visa page in October 2026 (last updated 16 September 2026), all visa applications now go through the e-Visa website thaievisa.go.th, which the page says came into effect on 1 January 2025. The same page says the 30-day visa exemption for Indian ordinary passport holders is for tourism and short-term business, effective from 15 September 2026 until further announcement. It is not a work route. Confirm both points on the official page before you plan anything.

Step by step: from job offer to work permit

  1. Get a written offer from a named Thai company, with job title, salary, place of work and contract length. Keep every message. If the offer arrives through social media or a stranger on WhatsApp, read the scam section below first.
  2. The employer starts the paperwork. The Thai MFA page says the prospective employer submits Form WP3 at the Office of Foreign Workers Administration, Department of Employment, or at the provincial employment office, to get a letter of approval from the Ministry of Labour. A Thai mission's Non-B employment checklist we read lists the Ministry of Labour approval letter (Form WP.32), an existing work permit, or a BOI letter as the accepted documents.
  3. Apply for the Non-Immigrant B visa online at thaievisa.go.th, as the Royal Thai Embassy New Delhi page directs. The MFA page lists a passport valid for at least 6 months, a recent 4 x 6 cm photo, evidence of funds (20,000 Baht per person, 40,000 Baht per family), the Ministry of Labour approval letter and the employer's company documents.
  4. Travel only after the visa is issued. The MFA page says the Non-B holder may stay for a maximum of 90 days on entry.
  5. Apply for the work permit after arrival. The MFA page says you or your representative apply at the Office of Foreign Workers Administration, or at the provincial employment office if the company is outside Bangkok. A Thai mission's checklist says this must be done within 90 days after entry.
  6. With the work permit, apply to the Immigration Bureau to extend your stay. The MFA page says the extension may be granted for up to one year from first entry. Your stay depends on the job, so a new employer usually means new paperwork. Ask the employer in writing.

Jobs reserved for Thai nationals

Thailand restricts some work to its own citizens. The Thailand Board of Investment SMART Visa FAQ, as read in October 2026, lists 27 occupations it describes as strictly forbidden for foreigners under a Ministry of Labour announcement dated 1 April 2020. They include driving motor vehicles (except international aircraft pilots and forklift drivers), haircutting and beauty work, Thai massage, tour guiding, hawking goods, clerical or secretarial work, brokerage or agency work (except international trade), legal services (with narrow arbitration exceptions), and many handicrafts such as wood carving, goldsmith work and making Buddha images.

Why this matters for Indian job-seekers: an offer for a driver, salon, massage, tour guide, office clerk or secretary job in Thailand should be treated with great caution, because the official list says foreigners cannot do that work. Ask the employer which occupation the work permit will name. The Department of Employment publishes the full rules at doe.go.th, but that site did not load for us in October 2026, so check it yourself or ask the Royal Thai Embassy.

Employer capital and Thai staff ratios: what is official

Many blogs state a fixed registered capital per foreign worker and a set number of Thai staff for each foreigner. We could not confirm the ratio of Thai staff on any official page we read, so we do not repeat it.

What we did find: one Thai mission's checklist for the Non-B employment visa (published on the Thai MFA image server for applicants in Malaysia) asks for the company's registration with registered capital of at least THB 2 million. The Thai MFA Non-B page says that, for the One Stop Service Centre, an executive or expert's associated company should have registered capital or assets of not less than 30 million Baht. These are different rules for different purposes. Ask your employer which one applies to your role, and confirm with the Royal Thai Embassy New Delhi.

LTR visa for skilled professionals

The Long-Term Resident (LTR) visa is run by the Board of Investment at ltr.boi.go.th. As shown on that site in October 2026, the High-Skilled Professionals category is for professionals or experts in targeted industries working for businesses, higher education or research institutions in Thailand, or Thai government agencies.

Destination Thailand Visa (DTV): not a route to a Thai job

The DTV is often sold online as a work visa. The official pages do not support that. The Royal Thai Embassy London DTV page (updated 8 September 2026) describes the workcation category as for digital nomads, remote workers, foreign talent and freelancers, and asks for an employment contract or certificate from an employer in the applicant's own country, plus funds of at least 500,000 THB. It gives 180 days per entry, extendable once by up to 180 days.

None of the official DTV pages we read says a DTV lets you take a job with a Thai employer, and the MFA rule remains that work in Thailand needs a work permit. If someone offers you a Thai job 'on a DTV', treat it as a red flag.

ECR passport? Thailand needs emigration clearance

The MEA's Overseas Employment overview dated 21 April 2026 says ECR passport holders need emigration clearance when going abroad for employment to the 19 designated ECR countries, and it names Thailand among them. Older MEA pages list 17 countries, so confirm the current list on mea.gov.in and the eMigrate portal before you fly.

If your passport is ECR and you are going to Thailand for work, complete emigration clearance on eMigrate (emigrate.gov.in) through your employer or an MEA-registered recruiting agent. Check any agent with our MEA registration check guide. If you hold an ECNR passport, the clearance step does not apply, but Thailand's visa and work permit rules still do.

Scam warnings: fake IT jobs and scam compounds

This is the biggest risk for Indians looking at Thailand. On 24 September 2022 the MEA issued an advisory titled 'Advisory regarding fake job rackets targeting IT skilled youth'. It said Indian Missions in Bangkok and Myanmar had reported fake offers for Digital Sales and Marketing Executive jobs in Thailand from dubious IT firms involved in call-centre scams and crypto-currency fraud, that targets were lured with data entry jobs through social media and by Dubai and India based agents, and that victims were taken illegally across the border, mostly into Myanmar, and held captive.

The Embassy of India in Bangkok repeated the warning in an advisory dated 18 July 2024. It says victims are lured by dubious and non-existing IT or investment firms in Thailand and then trafficked across the border to scam centres. It says entering Thailand under the visa-free regime is for tourism only and does not permit any employment. In a press release dated 10 March 2025, the Embassy said 283 Indian nationals were repatriated by an IAF aircraft from Mae Sot, Thailand, after being lured with fake job offers to scam centres along the Myanmar-Thailand border. At the MEA briefing of 7 October 2022, the spokesperson also described similar operations in Laos and Cambodia.

Frequently asked questions

Can Indians work in Thailand on the visa exemption or visa on arrival?

No. The Embassy of India in Bangkok says visa-free entry for Indians is meant for tourism only and does not permit any type of employment. Its earlier advisory also says visa on arrival does not permit employment. You need a Non-Immigrant B visa and a work permit.

What is the Thailand job visa called?

The usual route is the Non-Immigrant B visa, which the Royal Thai Embassy New Delhi lists for people who will be employed, conduct business, intern or attend conferences. Highly skilled professionals may also qualify for the LTR or SMART visas run by the Board of Investment.

How much does a Thailand work visa cost from India?

The Royal Thai Embassy New Delhi page listed a single-entry Non-Immigrant visa at 7,000 INR, a 1-year multiple-entry at 13,500 INR, and a 3-year B visa at 30,000 INR in October 2026. The work permit is a separate step. Confirm current fees on the official page.

Who applies for the Thailand work permit?

The employer starts it. The Thai MFA page says the prospective employer submits Form WP3 to the Department of Employment for a Ministry of Labour approval letter. After you arrive on the Non-B visa, you or your representative apply for the work permit itself.

Which jobs can foreigners not do in Thailand?

The Board of Investment lists 27 occupations strictly forbidden for foreigners under a Ministry of Labour announcement dated 1 April 2020, including driving, hairdressing, Thai massage, tour guiding, hawking, clerical or secretarial work and most legal services. Check the Department of Employment for the current list.

Can I work in Thailand on a Destination Thailand Visa (DTV)?

The official DTV pages describe it for remote workers and freelancers whose employer or clients are outside Thailand, plus soft-power activities. None we read allows a job with a Thai employer. For a Thai job, use the Non-Immigrant B visa and get a work permit.

Who qualifies for the Thailand LTR visa as a professional?

The LTR site says High-Skilled Professionals need average income of USD 80,000 a year over two years (or USD 40,000 plus a master's in science and technology), 5 years of experience in targeted industries, and health cover of USD 50,000. Check ltr.boi.go.th for the full rules.

Is Thailand an ECR country?

Yes. The MEA's overseas employment overview dated 21 April 2026 lists Thailand among 19 ECR countries where ECR passport holders need emigration clearance for jobs. Confirm the current list on mea.gov.in and eMigrate before you travel.

Are Thailand IT jobs offered on Instagram or Telegram genuine?

Be very careful. The MEA warned in September 2022 that fake Digital Sales and Marketing jobs in Thailand were used to traffic Indians into scam centres, mostly in Myanmar. Verify the employer through the Indian Embassy in Bangkok before you pay or travel.
