Most Indians need a concrete job offer, then a national visa from the German mission in India. Under §18 of the Residence Act the Federal Employment Agency usually has to approve the job, and your foreign qualification must be recognised as equivalent where the permit requires it. The Blue Card, the skilled-worker permits and the Opportunity Card have different conditions.
How does an Indian get a Germany work visa?
Most Indians need a concrete job offer, then a national visa from the German mission in India. Under §18 of the Residence Act the Federal Employment Agency usually has to approve the job, and your foreign qualification must be recognised as equivalent where the permit requires it. The Blue Card, the skilled-worker permits and the Opportunity Card have different conditions.
There is no single "Germany work visa". The German Residence Act (AufenthG) has several permits for employment, and the German Embassy New Delhi lists them as separate travel purposes with different appointment routes. Section 18 sets the common rules: a concrete job offer, approval from the Bundesagentur für Arbeit (Federal Employment Agency) unless the law says approval is not needed, a licence to practise if the profession is regulated, and recognition of your qualification where the permit depends on it. Both you and the employer must also declare that the job will really be taken up.
A skilled worker, in the statute's words, is either someone with a qualified vocational training (German or an equivalent foreign one) or someone with a German, recognised foreign or comparable foreign university degree. Sections 18a and 18b each say that such a person receives a residence permit for any qualified employment. Confirm everything below on the official pages listed in the sources, because rules and thresholds change.
For how the Chancenkarte differs from the older search permit in §20, read our job seeker visa vs Opportunity Card comparison. As fetched in October 2026, §20 gives a search permit of up to 18 months to people who finished study, research, training or a recognition procedure in Germany, so it does not replace the Opportunity Card for someone applying from India.
| Route | What the law or embassy page says | Job offer first? |
|---|---|---|
| Skilled worker with vocational training (§18a) | Permit for any qualified job. Your foreign vocational qualification must be equivalent to a German one, which is checked through recognition (see below). | Yes |
| Skilled worker with a degree (§18b) | Permit for any qualified job. The degree must be German, recognised abroad, or comparable to a German degree. | Yes |
| EU Blue Card (§18g) | The Federal Ministry of the Interior notice of 2 December 2025 gives a 2026 minimum gross salary of 50,700 euros a year (50% of the pension contribution ceiling), or 45,934.20 euros (45.3%) for the lower-threshold cases. | Yes |
| Experienced professional without a recognised qualification (§19c(2) with §6 Employment Ordinance) | Consent can be given if you have at least two years of professional experience gained in the last five years, a job paying at least 45% of the annual pension ceiling (waived if the employer is bound by a collective agreement and applies it), and a state-recognised foreign vocational qualification of at least two years or a state-recognised foreign degree. In ICT occupations the qualification condition does not apply. | Yes |
| Opportunity Card (Chancenkarte) (§20a) | Lets you look for work for up to one year, with part-time work of up to 20 hours a week. Booked through VFS at the New Delhi embassy page. | No |
| Recognition measures (§16d) | A permit of up to 24 months to complete an adaptation or qualification measure when the recognition body says one is needed; German language skills, usually at least sufficient, are required. | Depends |
The New Delhi embassy page we fetched in October 2026 names appointment routes but does not list the documents. The statute pages tell you what has to be proved, not which forms to bring. Use the checklist for your visa type on the embassy page or the Consular Service Portal, since it varies by category.
The government portal Anerkennung in Deutschland, run by the Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training (BIBB), describes itself as the information service for recognising foreign professional qualifications and reported record application numbers for 2025. The page we read did not give fees or processing times, so we cannot state any. Under §81a, once a recognition procedure has been started through the fast track, the immigration office must invite the employer within three working days of receiving further requests or the body's findings.
Processing times for the visa are not published on the pages we read. The embassy only says that waiting times may apply because of limited capacity and that a waiting list is available through VFS if slots are fully booked. Do not buy tickets or resign from your job until you hold the visa.
The employer offers the job and the authorities decide the permit. No agent can promise approval. Read our overseas job scam warning signs and the step-by-step job abroad guide. Only on a route made for that. The Opportunity Card (§20a) allows up to one year of job search with part-time work of up to 20 hours a week. The §20 search permit as fetched is for people who finished study, research, training or recognition in Germany. Other employment permits need a concrete job offer first.
The Federal Ministry of the Interior notice of 2 December 2025 gives 50,700 euros gross a year (50% of the pension ceiling) and 45,934.20 euros (45.3%) for the lower-threshold cases. Figures change each year, so confirm on the official page.
Not always. §18a covers vocational training and §19c(2) with §6 of the Employment Ordinance covers experienced professionals with a state-recognised foreign qualification, and in ICT occupations the qualification condition does not apply. Two years of experience in the last five years and a minimum salary still apply.
Both play a part. §18 says the Federal Employment Agency approves under §39 unless the law exempts the job, and you apply for the visa through the German mission. §81a lets the immigration office coordinate this in advance.
The German Embassy New Delhi page says most employment visas, including Blue Card cases, go through the Consular Service Portal, and the Opportunity Card is booked through VFS. Which mission covers your region is something to confirm on india.diplo.de.
The pages we read give no processing time. The embassy only warns of waiting times and says applications through the Consular Service Portal lead to faster appointments and shorter processing.
No. The permit is decided by German authorities, and the job comes from the employer. Treat any guarantee or upfront fee for a visa as a warning sign.
